Origin & History of Chikankari

Chikankari is the most traditional embroidery style from Lucknow.  Chikan in the literal sense means embroidery. The word Chikan is basically derived from the Persian word Chikeen. Chikankari in earlier days was Traditionally done on mulmul - fine muslin cloth. There is also a tale that a traveler taught this art of chikanakri to peasant in exchange of water
Chikankari stems from white -on -white embroidery of Shiraz that came to India as a part of the culture of Persian nobles at the Mughal court. The origin of Chikankari is initiated by the influence of the intricate carving of  Mughal architecture during their period.




Chikankari work is native to the city of Lucknow

Chikankari in Lucknow has a rich history behind it, patronized by Nawabs. There are about 5000 families belonging to the art of chikankari. The artisans belong to the local Muslim community. Earlier it was done on white or colorless muslin cloth known as Tanzeb









Chikanakri is mostly done by women

The magic of this fine art of chikankari in Lucknow is usually done by female karigars. This art has beautifully evolved with times, traditionally done on mulmul now with this growing demand internationally this exclusive work of art is flourishing and carried on various fabrics like cotton, semi-Georgette, pure Georgette, pure silk, tassar silk, etc
